Participation in the Optics and Photonics International Congress (Yokohama, Japan)

Undergraduates of the new direction “Biomedical photonics and electronics”, opened in 2017 as part of the implementation of the strategic project “National Research and Development Center of Biomedical Photonics”, which are also researchers of this center - Elena ZharkikhKsenia Kandurova and Evgeniya Seryogina took part in the Optics and Photonics International Congress 2019 (Yokohama, Japan), held from April 22 to April 26, 2019.

During the congress, our students presented poster and oral reports in the framework of the “Biomedical Imaging and Sensing Conference (BISC2019)” section , which are the results of the implementation of the support university strategic project “University Clinic of Socially Important Diseases”, carried out in close cooperation with leading Oryol region medical institutions (Oryol regional clinical hospital), and with foreign research centers (University of Oulu):

The interest of colleagues was shown to the presented works, the possibilities for further joint research were discussed.

The congress was organized in close cooperation with the International Societies for Optics and Photonics (SPIE and OSA), whose student chapters are open and successfully operate at our university. Each year, SPIE gives a travel grant to one of the students of each student chapter for participation in one of their conferences. This year, such a grant was received by the undergraduate of the 1st course of the “Biomedical photonics and electronics” direction, Evgeniya Seryogina. The undergraduate of the 2nd course of the same direction, Elena Zharkikh, was able to participate in this event thanks to the internship program of the President’s scholarship to study abroad, which she successfully completes at the University of Oulu (Oulu, Finland).

During the congress, students took part in various workshops, including the SPIE Student Leadership Workshop, and gained new knowledge about successful techniques of writing scientific articles and preparing presentations. During the workshop, various issues related to the management of student chapters, as well as issues related to scientific and technical communication were discussed. Also during the conference, they met with the 2019 President of the International Society for Optics and Photonics SPIE. During the workshop, representatives of our student chapter spoke about the results of their activities for 2018 and shared their plans for the future. Their presentation was highly appreciated by the representatives of the student chapters from other universities.
