Open Lecture by Plamena Stroh (Angelova), Senior Research Associate, University College London

November 30, 2019, the Orel State University named after I.S. Turgenev hosted an open lecture on the topic "Molecular mechanism of Neurodegeneration: Mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitophagy, autophagy and lysosomal defects" by one of the leading scientists in this field - Dr Plamena Stroh (Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Neurology, University College London). The lecture highlighted the study of progressive and incurable neurodegenerative diseases (in particular, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, etc.).

The lecture was organized by the Orel State Univ. Student Chapter and the staff of the R&D center of biomedical photonics.

In addition to students and teachers of the Institute of Instrument Engineering, Automation and Information Technology (Biotechnological Systems and Technologies, Instrument Engineering, etc.), students from the Medical Institute (General Medicine, Pediatrics) and the Institute of Natural Sciences and Biotechnology (Department of Industrial Chemistry and Biotechnology) also attended.

The staff of the Research and Development Center of Biomedical Photonics conducted a lab tour for the lecturer and discussed issues of joint research in the field of biomedical photonics in the framework of the previously won “megagrant” (project “Mitochondria as a Target in the Mechanism of Neurodegenerative Diseases”).

Orel State University Student Chapter and R&D Center of Biomedical Photonics plan to invite well-known scientists to conduct more lectures at Orel State University for development of new research directions and educational activities in the future.
