Lecture "Studying the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases" within the framework of the educational campaign "On the edge of science"

Within the framework of the Year of Science and Technology, the Coordinating Council for Youth Affairs in the Scientific and Educational Spheres of the Presidential Council for Science and Education launched the action "On the Edge of Science", aimed at involving schoolchildren and their parents, students in the research sphere, as well as forming an idea of the profession of a modern researcher. As part of one of the directions, scientists talk about their research and projects, about the main achievements of Russian science and technology, and show how their scientific discoveries are changing everyday life.

On September 9, 2021, within the framework of this project, a lecture was held by Andrey Yuryevich Abramov, head of the Сell physiology and pathology Laboratory of Orel State University, created as part of the megagrant program, on the topic "Studying the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases" (the project « Mitochondria as a target in the mechanism of neurodegenerative diseases»).

An increase in life expectancy in most countries leads to an increase in the number of people with age-dependent neurodegenerative diseases. Almost all of these diseases are currently incurable. The study of cellular and molecular mechanisms of pathologies leading to the death of neurons is necessary for the development of new methods of treatment of these diseases. Andrey Abramov spoke about the current trends in the study of major neurodegenerative diseases and the achievements of the teams at the Institute of Neurology at University College London and Orel State University. The lecture is available online on the Vkontakte platform.
