Presentation of the new laboratory of R&D Center of Biomedical Photonics
As part of the flagship university strategic project “National Research and Development Center of Biomedical Photonics”, a new scientific laboratory of the Research and Development Center of Biomedical Photonics was created (room 206, 29, Naugorskoe Hwy, Orel, Russia).
Development of the newest technologies of optical non-invasive diagnostics of blood supply and life support of biological tissues in the new laboratory will promote methods for early diagnosis of disorders in such socially important diseases as diabetes, abdominal diseases, and rheumatological disorders. The development of new competencies will be aimed at improving the educational, scientific and innovative activities of the university.
The main tasks of the laboratory are:
- conducting research in the field of biomedical photonics;
- development of a new educational orientation "Biomedical photonics and electronics" within the framework of direction 12.04.04 "Biotechnical systems and technologies" (together with the department "Instrumentation, Metrology and Certification");
- conducting interdisciplinary research (biotechnology, pharmacology, medicine, physics, mathematics, IT, etc.) with other structural divisions of the university;
- cooperation with major medical centers of our and other regions;
- approbation and introduction of new technologies in the field of photonics into medical practice.
Key scientific directions of the laboratory:
- diagnosis of the state of the lower limbs in diabetes mellitus;
- diagnosis of microcirculatory disorders in rheumatic diseases;
- evaluation of the state of tissues and mucous membranes during minimally invasive abdominal interventions;
- research in the field of creating modern forms of medicines and methods of drug delivery optical control;
- development of wearable devices for assessing the condition of the microcirculatory bed.
Applied photonics methods:
- Laser Doppler flowmetry;
- Fluorescence spectroscopy;
- Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy;
- Capillaroscopy;
- Hyperspectral imaging, etc.
The laboratory is equipped with the most advanced optical equipment of well-known manufacturers: "ThorLabs", "Ocean Optics", etc. It includes: CCD cameras and CMOS cameras, spectrometers, radiation sources (lasers, LEDs, LED controllers, LED power supplies, broadband radiation sources), lenses and micro-lenses, radiation detectors, optomechanical elements, etc.
The equipment includes a wide range of instruments and multifunctional complexes from the industrial partner of the laboratory - (SPE “LAZMA” Ltd, Moscow): LAKK-02, LAKK-M, LAKK-OP, LAZMA-D, LAZMA-TEST ", etc.
The Laboratory of Research and Development Center of Biomedical Photonics actively cooperates with various scientific, medical and educational organizations of Russia and abroad and conducts joint research and educational programs in the framework of agreements on scientific and technical cooperation with the following organizations:
- Optoelectronics and Biomedical Photonics Group of Aston University (Birmingham, United Kingdom);
- Department of computer photonics and video informatics of ITMO University (St. Petersburg);
- Optoelectronics and Measurement Techniques Laboratory of University of Oulu (Oulu, Finland);
- Orel Regional Clinical Hospital (Orel);
- National Medical Research Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics named after N.N. Priorov of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (Moscow).
As part of the implementation of the strategic project, a model of the device for optical non-invasive diagnostics of microcirculatory tissue disorders (modification for endocrinology) was developed.
The laboratory of Research and Development Center of Biomedical Photonics is open for comprehensive cooperation and interdisciplinary research!
We express our deep gratitude to the photographer Yuriy Kandurov.
